About
Castor Oil
Castor oil has been used for its medicinal qualities in Asia and Africa for thousands of years. It came to the to the Americas in the 17th century.
Edgar Cayce, the father of holistic medicine, is credited for being a major contributor to the increased use of this healing oil in the United States.
Castor oil is obtained from the castor oil plant, Ricinus communis, also referred to as Palma Cristi or the “Palm of Christ” because of the shape of its leaves. The oil is extracted from the seeds of the plant, which are poisonous until processed.
Castor oil is a fatty acid triglyceride that contains 90 percent ricinoleic acid, the ingredient thought to be responsible for the oil's healing properties. The Food and Drug Administration has categorized castor oil as “generally recognized as safe and effective.”
